We are looking for a Director of the Advisory Board (Bestuursvoorzitter)

Vacancy: Chair of the Advisory Board
Organisation: The Artist and the Others
Profile: Fundraising
Closing date: July 31st

The Artist and the Others is an internationally active non-profit foundation based in Maastricht and Munich.

Since 2013, the organisation has been supporting artists and cultural professionals in building sustainable careers in the cultural and creative sector — through training programmes, workshops, networking events, exhibitions and an Erasmus+ project addressing current challenges in the arts.

Rooted in the conviction that the arts are indispensable to society, The Artist and the Others actively works to dismantle the unequal and unsustainable structures of the art world. Building on a long-term commitment to emerging artists and those re-entering the field, the foundation currently focuses on creating a more inclusive and accessible art world, with dedicated programmes for Artist-Parents and artists with disabilities. The Artist and the Others also acts as a cultural connector between universities, art academies, institutions and organisations across the Euregio and Europe.

The organisation has been supported by the Province of Limburg, the Municipality of Maastricht and Mondriaan Fonds, Elisabeth Strooven Fonds, The Municipality of Munich, the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, next to Private funds and European Funding such as Erasmus+ funding program.

Chair of the Advisory Board
Voluntary position

Foundation The Artist and the Others (TAATO) is looking for a Chair of the Board to start from September. As chair, you are the face of the foundation and you contribute to the strategic direction of the organisation. You connect the artistic mission with business reality and social responsibilities, and act as a sounding board and strategic partner for the director.

The Supervisory Board of TAATO consists of four members with complementary expertise and diverse backgrounds and perspectives. TAATO endorses the Code Cultural Governance. All members are expected to know, endorse and comply with the Code Cultural Governance and the foundation’s statutes. We are looking for a critical and inspiring individual with:

  • Affinity with contemporary (visual) art and a passion for cultural innovation.
  • Affinity with visual art and an understanding of the challenges artists face.
  • Expertise and a strong network in the national arts and culture world.
  • Experience in fundraising and knowledge of grant providers and their criteria.
  • A relevant network and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to guide decision-making and tactfully balance different interests: those of artists, the board, local government and funders.
  • Governance qualities, an independent stance and a strong analytical mind.
  • A connection to Limburg and Maastricht.
  • Broad social engagement.
  • Within the board, you are the primary point of contact for the director and ensure good working conditions for both the director and staff.
  • The time and commitment to fulfil the role adequately (approximately 1 to 1.5 days per quarter), including attending meetings mostly done online.
  • You are a native or have a great command of Dutch.

Additional expertise

As a Director of the Supervisory Board you contribute to:

  • Developing and implementing fundraising strategies to strengthen the financial foundation of TAATO.

  • Ensuring good governance in line with the Code Cultural Governance, Fair Practice Code and Code Diversity & Inclusion
  • Contributing to the long-term vision of TAATO, with attention to innovation, inclusion and social impact.

You ideally have a Board-level experience, preferably in the non-profit or cultural sector. We warmly invite candidates who are taking on this role as Chair of the Supervisory Board for the first time and who bring relevant expertise and a fresh perspective to apply.
